The reason for having two sections is that for some reason the sound disappeared and noone could hear so I had to go out of Adobe Connect and come back in again to restore the sound. Because of this I created a screencast video of my presentation and uploaded it to YouTube. You might prefer to watch that instead. Here it is:

SchoolNet webinar recording from Thursday 7 November 3:30pm ‘Using Mind Mapping software in all subjects’ (Dr Ron Beyers)

image

On Thursday afternoon (7 November) at 3.30pm we held a SchoolNet webinar entitled ‘Using Mind Mapping software in all subjects’ presented by Dr Ron Beyers, Managing Director of Young Engineers and Scientists of Africa. Thank you to all who attended the webinar.

Summary of the webinar
This is Dr Beyer’s description “
If your brain is like mine you will understand how some of your learners feel when it comes to making sense of the work. A good educator has the ability to make sense out of subject information and provide a framework for learners to understand the interrelationship of concepts. Take the educator away and the weaker learners are unable to continue by themselves. Learning has to continue outside the walls of the classroom. Mind maps is a teaching and learning tool which provides the user with the opportunity to do a brain dump of all possible ideas without any structure. Once this phase is complete they can then rearrange their ideas to look for interrelationships for themselves and construct their own meaning. This is in stark contrast to having to cram information into their heads and simply recall it based on key stimuli in tests/exams. Change the stimuli and the learners are lost. Sound familiar? What is teaching all about?
This presentation will introduce users to the idea of making use of any type of mind mapping software for virtually any subject from writing essays, to creating summaries of chapters, planning activities, etc. The process is to empower learners to move from information receivers to knowledge generators which our country desperately needs – people who can think for themselves.
'Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school'. (Einstein)
P.S.
1) This presentation will be based on the use of FreeMind and FreePlane Software which is freeware.
http://freeplane.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page
2) It is also available as portable software and can be run directly off a memory stick without installing onto the host machine. This means that it can be downloaded for free and your learners can take it home as well.

Fiona’s presentation is given below via Slideshare and you can download it if you wish to.

Summary of the webinar
Name: Have you discovered Learnist boards? Try creating one...
Summary: With the Internet being so HUGE these days educators have to become master curators of content. A Learnist Board is a really useful way to curate and keep a record of the information that you need. I love using Diigo, Pinterest and Scoopit for curation purposes, but Learnist has its own unique properties that sets it apart as a useful way of collecting the sites you want to keep.

In this webinar you'll hear Bram Faems talk about creating quizzes in PowerPoint and how to playfully teach young students the basics of coding with Kodu Game Lab.

Webinar recording from 29/05/2013 - Uploading a Learning Activity to the Partners in Learning Network

Yesterday we had a great webinar presented by Megan Rademeyer of SchoolNet. It showed how to create and upload a Learning Activity to the Microsoft Partners in Learning Network. This webinar is of special relevance to anyone who wishes to enter the Microsoft Innovative Educator Expert competition which has new requirements this year. These requirements require uploading a Learning Activity to the Partners in Learning Network and creating a 2 minute video about that Learning Activity. (A Learning Activity can be anything from one really good lesson, or a series of lessons on a topic, or a project).   If you wish to be one of the 15 teachers selected to be sponsored to the Schoolnet Conference in July as part of the South African and Lesotho Partners in Learning Forum you need to do this by Monday 3rd June. However the competition proper has a closing date of 30 September 2013.

The webinar summary
"Are you using technology in a creative and engaging way to enhance a lesson? Have you developed a project that makes use of technology to build knowledge or solve a real world problem? If so - share your learning activity on the Partners in Learning Network and you could win a trip to the Global Partners in Learning Forum. In this webinar you will learn about the requirements for the competition and tips for developing an impressive learning activity."

The presentation used for the webinar
SlideShare is a useful free tool for sharing PowerPoints, Keynotes or PDFs on the web. I use it constantly. I have put my presentation into Slideshare, and please notice that I have pasted the same license that we will use on to the title page! That’s how easy it is to license something!
